Why I love Adelaide: Amelia Mulcahy

Last updated 31 Jan, 2024

Amelia Mulcahy has seen a lot of the city and North Adelaide as Channel 7 Adelaide's weather presenter. She share's her favourite places and memories in Adelaide, gives some insight into the Mulcahy family and gives her suggestions for where you should be Hitting the Town this winter.

What do you like most about Adelaide?

Right now, I really like our identity. I feel like we’ve got this perfect mix of old meets new, we’ve got the cool new bars and laneways but we’ve still got the old institutions that we all know and love as well. You just need to look at our skyline to know that’s who we are and I think that we’re nailing it at the moment.

What do you enjoy about winter in Adelaide?

I’m really enjoying how there are fire pits, there’s so many people in all the laneways even down the East End, everyone is just rugging up and coming in and there’s a really good atmosphere. I can’t wait to see Illuminate Adelaide the festival taking over all these spaces too, I think it’s going to be really cool time to come in.

Best place for coffee?

Depends what I’m doing. Hey Jupiter is always the coolest place to have coffee, you feel like you’re almost in Paris. Just going there, having your long black, sitting at the cool kids table outside. One I really love to support as well is Café Outside the Square on Whitmore Square. You can get a coffee there, you can pay it forward for someone and the money that that places makes through coffee sales and lunches and things like that goes to homeless support services in Adelaide. Nothing beats going to the Central Market, feeling smug because you’re there early and going to Lucia’s for a coffee – institution.

Tell us your pick of the events and festivals in the city during winter…

Illuminate Adelaide. I am so excited to have it take over the city. It’s going to be cool, you aren’t going to want to be anywhere else with all of the events going on. Also just to see our beautiful old building just light up with some of the displays and things they’ve got planned. I cant wait to see Light Cycles in the Botanic Garden, that sounds incredible and even just taking my daughter in to see Light Creatures at the Adelaide Zoo, I think that will be really, really fun.

What's you best memory of Adelaide?

My favourite memory is an overall memory, so I’m going to give you a little bit of an insight into the Mulcahy family. We always have to go out for dinner on the night of someones birthday. And the directive is that you have to pick somewhere new that we haven’t been to before. The last place we went to, we were trying the new menu at Africola for example. They are my favourite memories, going to new places with my family for special occasions and there’s no shortage of them here.
