Why I love Adelaide: Lord Mayor Sandy Verschoor

Last updated 31 Jan, 2024

After living in different places all over the world, the Lord Mayor of Adelaide Sandy Verschoor chose Adelaide as her favourite place and where she wants to live. Learn why she made that decision as she talks about why she loves the city.

What do you like most about Adelaide?

I love Adelaide, I’m one of those people that choose to live here. I’ve lived in different places and worked in different places all over the world, but I cannot think of a better place that I would want to be. It’s close to everything – you’ve got sea, you’ve got hills, you’ve got amazing food and wine. It’s big enough that you don’t feel like you’re in a tiny place and it’s small enough that you can still connect with everyone.

Why is winter a great time to visit the city?

There are so many things on, I think there is over 50 events in the city over winter. And of course my background is in arts and culture so there are events like SALA which is extraordinary. It’s in so many venues you can see it everywhere. You’ve got Umbrella Festival, we are an UNESCO City of Music and all of that live music is pumping through winter, there’s just so many things to see and do.

Favourite bar or restaurant in the city?

I don’t think I can say (laughs), I’ve got many. So we did a staycation and I was very careful not to post all of the photos because we actually did a ‘let’s go to all the place I haven’t been to’ so we did visit a lot of the new places and it was fantastic. And, there are so many different experiences, whether you want to be rooftop or underground, or just in these really intimate spaces, it’s just fantastic.

Tell us your pick of the events and festivals in the city during winter?

We’ve got the new Illuminate Festival which is going to be extraordinary. Umbrella I love, some of the music you can experience over winter is great. We kicked off the Cabaret Festival of course and SALA Festival, I always buy a piece of art so I look forward to SALA every year so I can find a new emerging artist and support an artist by buying some work.
