Crown & Anchor Hotel

196-198 Grenfell Street (also known as 35-39 Union Street) ADELAIDE

Local Heritage Place (Townscape)

A hotel has existed on this site since 1847. By 1852 a public house called the Union Inn was sold to James Ellery. Alterations occurred the following year and the hotel became known as the Crown and Anchor. When Ellery passed in 1869, his wife Anna owned the hotel until her passing in 1873 when it was sold to prominent citizen Edwin Thomas Smith. Smith transferred it to his business, the South Australian Brewing Malting and Wine and Spirit Co. Ltd, who owned the hotel until 1982.

The single storey hotel was replaced in 1880 by a two-storey hotel designed by architect Thomas English. A balcony and verandah were added in 1928 to the design on architect F. Kenneth Milne who included Wunderlich metal sheets for the ceilings and metal columns.
