Artist Cheryl's city experience

Artist Cheryl Bridgart loves city living. Here’s why:

When did you move to the suburb and why?

I moved to the Adelaide CBD in 2009 when I was lucky enough to acquire an 1860s horse stables — Beltana — to convert into a studio/gallery/house. We chose to move here for a change of lifestyle — the bonus was we saved it from demolition. I view myself more of a custodian than an owner.

What do you like most about living there?

The convenience — I walk, catch the free bus and sometimes go for a week without driving. I have the Park Lands at my doorstep. The Zoo, where I like to draw animals and birds, is a short walk through the Botanic Gardens.

What do you enjoy doing on the weekend in your area?

I love walking through the Parklands to the North Tce cultural strip, the Botanic Gardens, the art galleries and David Jones. I observe, I people-watch. The stimulation, the inspiration, the diversity is heaven.

What is your favourite cafe?

Chianti — for the cuisine, the attention to detail and Maria’s welcoming smile. The perfect place to start the day and to socialise.

What is your favourite shop?

The shop I visit the most is Theo’s Hutt St IGA. It’s a family business with family service and great local produce. This small shop has a huge presence in our neighbourhood.

What is your fondest memory of living in the area?

The excitement of my first SALA exhibition. More than 1,000 people attended. This inspired me to have a solo exhibition every year during SALA. To date more than 16,000 people have been to my exhibitions.

Your favourite landmark?

Adelaide Town Hall. It was the venue for my first solo exhibition in the CBD. I’m passionate about preserving our built heritage, so all of Adelaide’s old buildings are “landmarks” for me.

What is the best thing your suburb offers?

The Art Gallery of SA and its collection of more than 45,000 works of art — the second largest collection in Australia. I also love the AGSA shop, its food and wine, and First Fridays, when the gallery stays open late. I’s my home away from home.

Why do you love where you live?

I live, create and play in the CBD. I like being close to everything, and I get a constant stream of visitors. I feel blessed.
