An ode to South Australia: Find the ‘easter eggs’ in Hotel Indigo

Last updated 11 Aug, 2022

Everything about Hotel Indigo Adelaide Markets screams South Australia.

From its location being on the doorstep of the Adelaide Central Markets, Her Majesty’s Theatre and the Festival Theatre, to its produce being bought from the Markets and stocking gin from Prohibition Liquor Co which is right around the corner, you’ll learn about more than just Hotel Indigo when you stay there.

The Hotel is hidden with little ‘easter eggs’ that pay homage to South Australia and you should stay there to make sure you find them all.

‘Easter eggs’ is mainly a term used in technology, when developers hide little secrets in their computer program and people have to find them, but the same term applies to Hotel Indigo.

“You have to look around Hotel Indigo, some of them are very obvious but some are hidden in plain sight,” Adam Warren, Marketing Manager of Hotel Indigo said on the Experience Adelaide podcast.

“We have pink everywhere throughout the hotel because of the amazing South Australian Premier Don Dunstan who was a pioneer in terms of entertainment in terms of art, in terms of culture, food, food, everything that we stand for as a Hotel.

“We have, bricks in our Hotel that have things on them like the Malls Balls, Feast Festival and people ask what they are about if they aren’t from Adelaide and our team explains.

“There’s 48 different posters throughout the hotel that we use as artwork, old Guitar Festival, OzAsia, Fringe, Cabaret posters, to showcase we are the Festival State.

“Our elevators and all through the bathrooms and even the bedrooms are filled with copper, one of South Australia's mining industries.

“Our colour scheme for the rooftop bar Merrymaker came from the now gone Adelaide Festival Plaza.”

Adam explained those styling decisions came from wanting to promote the partnerships the Hotel has with the Festivals and all the other amazing aspects of Adelaide.

“We want people to come into Adelaide and actually discover the amazing amount of little bars and little nooks and crannies of the city that exist,” Adam said.

“What we want people to do is to ask us the questions about what they’ve discovered on their search and really be inquisitive about what is it and why is that you've done this?

“Those partnerships are important for us because we can continue to tell South Australia’s story while bringing it into our own little neighbourhood story as well.”
