Smart city self-guided tour
Adelaide is embedding 21st century digital technology into its City services and infrastructure to improve the functionality of the entire city. It is also creating compelling experiences for people visiting the city and using the available infrastructure and services. The Smart City Walking Tour will highlight the initiatives detailed below.
The Adelaide Smart City Studio was established in November 2015 to create opportunities for innovators to build products and services that will help Adelaide, and other cities across the world, to better meet the needs of their constituents.

Ten Gigabit Adelaide is a revolutionary high-speed, high-performance fibre optic data network that is being rolled out to commercial buildings across the City of Adelaide.

The City of Adelaide recently partnered with tech giant Cisco and lighting specialist Sensity to upgrade more than 60 street lights along Pirie Street and Hindmarsh Square with smart technology to enable greater convenience and efficiencies in on-demand smart lighting and energy conservation.
The trial was a success and the City of Adelaide is currently exploring options to roll-out smart LED street lights in other areas of the City.
With over 200,000 vehicles visiting the city every day, we know there is high demand for parking. That’s why we’ve introduced smart parking to improve parking availability in the city.
We have launched a new mobile app, ‘Park Adelaide’, to provide accurate, real- time parking information. The app will let you locate a suitable park, pay for it, and extend your parking time (if needed). It will also give you directions to available space clusters, information about parking controls, and alerts when your park is about to expire.
To facilitate this, we have installed in-ground sensors in roughly 2,800 on-street parking spaces, and communication relays on some electricity poles.

City Library is a ‘place of possibility’, and our spaces, programs and collections are designed for the community to have opportunities to express themselves in many ways.
Our library mission revolves around lifelong learning supported by our library goals of facilitating experimental learning, challenging conventional thinking, and providing quality collections, all of which lend themselves to self-expression, creativity and discovery.
While the library still provides access to books, magazines and other media for consumption, it also supports community creativity using video green screens, music production, virtual reality and robots. It also offers an artist in residence program to make digital creativity more accessible to people.
AdelaideFree is providing free wireless coverage in outdoor areas across the CBD and North Adelaide.
The AdelaideFree network is jointly funded by City of Adelaide and the Government of South Australia. AdelaideFree is built and operated by Internode, a South Australian based Internet Service Provider and part of the TPG group.
Originally launched as CityLan in 2003, it is the largest and most heavily used city WiFi network in Australia.
The City of Adelaide is trialling solar-powered ‘Smart Bins’ in key areas of the city to help keep our streets cleaner and more attractive.
The ‘Clean Cube’ bins use innovative cloud-based technology to optimise waste collection. Inside each cube is a normal wheelie bin which sits under a solar-powered sensor that provides real-time data information about how full the bin is and when it needs to be emptied.
The cubes also contain a compactor which condenses the rubbish inside when it reaches a certain level. This enables a 120-litre bin to hold up to 960 litres of rubbish – about 8 x more rubbish than a normal waste bin.

Adelaide Zoo was the first in Australia to utilise Bluetooth beacon technology to enhance the visitor experience.
Using the zoo app, guests can interact with 65 locations and unlock information about the animals and the zoo's facilities.
