Voyagers

Shaun Kirby - Thylacine Art Projects

Voyagers by South Australian artist Shaun Kirby and Thylacine Art Projects uses symbols and shapes that respond to Afghan Islamic heritage. The crescent shape is reflective of the moon found in Islamic culture and also mimics the common shape of dunes in Australia and the east. The rippled tiles were produced at the JamFactory and are reminiscent of the wind blown sand patterns that are found on dunes. The screen uses imagery taken from traditional eastern and astral navigation patterning. A small obelisk contains the names in English and Pashto (Arabic script) of the various destinations that the Afghan cameleers travelled to and from in Australia.
