Rhythms of Construction 1 - 3 "Construction/Thought/Optimism

The three elements of Victor Meertens piece Rhythms of Construction 1-3 (Construction/Thought/Optimism) are a reproduction in bronze of a model made up of galvanised steel. They take on a rough and inflexible appearance of the material and yet the bronze material gives importance to their existence. Each piece has some human connection- they appear human like- but are still true to their ‘steel like’ materiality. The fact that many figures are made in bronze and that Adelaide has quite a history of bronze statues and monuments indicates that Meertens was interested in monuments. The material blends into the surrounding environment, while suggesting the tenuous existence of humans in this environment.
