Diptych Allegory

Lisa King

Lisa King’s ‘Diptych Allegory’ is a large-scale mural depicting Phineas Botten and Mary Bowser dressed formally as if sitting for a portrait. In 1882 Mary Bowser (nee Botten) was able to purchase allotment 92, making her the first woman to benefit from the UK Women’s Property Act of 1882. This act allowed women to have a separate identity to their husbands, enabling them to purchase property. Phineas Botten, Mary’s brother, was a stockbroker, blacksmith, constable and councillor in Prospect who purchased allotment 94 in 1888.

Either side of this North Adelaide building shows a different perspective of the picture, giving the viewer a feeling of walking around the figures.

Lisa King is an Australian figurative painter and muralist. King has painted murals across Australia, USA, China and New Zealand. Her work primarily focuses on realistic portraiture with dynamic compositions.
