Black Spring

Andy Goldsworthy

British international artist Andy Goldsworthy is known for his environmental sculpture.

Commissioned as part of the 1992 Festival of Arts, Black Spring was Inspired by a residency in the northern Flinders Ranges. Goldsworthy constructed the sculpture from Parachilna slate and a central black hole of infinite depth is surrounded by the natural slate.

The sculpture is located in the south-east corner of the Adelaide Botanic Garden, near the National Wine Centre.

The Royal Botanical Gardens in Edinburgh also hosts the sculptural sister artwork Slate, Hole, Wall, which amazingly is located on exactly the geometrically opposing line - truly the opposite ends of the earth!
