The Criterion Hotel was established in 1857 as the Family Hotel and changed its name in 1864. The building underwent many changes before it was demolished in 2010. A popular watering hole with journalists from the nearby Advertiser building.

'Soldier Injured In City
Wallace Bruton Cleary, 23, a NSW soldier, was found unconscious at about 6 p.m. on Thursday on the footpath outside the Criterion Hotel. It was reported to the police that just previously several soldiers and two seamen had, been involved in a brawl. Cleary was taken to the Wayville camp hospital, and was later admitted to 105 AGH suffering from concussion and lacerations to the forehead. Yesterday he was reported to be progressing favorably. Detective Whitrod is investigating.'
