West Terrace Flour Mill, 1850

Photo taken 30 December 1849

State Library Catalogue Reference: B 14343

This 1850 watercolour sketch by Charles Summers shows the West Terrace flour mill on the northern corner of West Terrace and Waymouth Street. It was the second windmill to be built in Adelaide. The circular tower was designed by George Kingston and built in 1842 by HW Phillips.

Its walls were nearly a metre thick and 15 metres high built of bricks made from River Torrens clay. Its sails were damaged by lightning in 1843 and the tower was partially destroyed by fire in 1876.

Extensive alterations were made in 1882 and Stephen & Co set up the Enterprise Brewery in the building from 1885 to 88. Some years later the tower was demolished.

The site has since been Motteram and Williamson biscuit manufacturer, a terrazzo company, Castalloy car products, car sales, and a student apartment building.
