Row cottages, Currie Street, 1963

Photo taken 01 January 1963

State Library Catalogue Reference: B 14768

These seven row cottages on Currie Street were built around 1890. They are seen here in 1963 with the West End brewery chimney on Hindley Street visible.

The residents of the cottages reflected the working class nature of the West End. For example, in 1890 they were a blacking maker, a storekeeper and five labourers. In 1904 they were a miner, storeman, railway guard, civil servant, importer, tailor and pipe layer. In 1930 they were two labourers, a groom, engine driver, blacksmith, wood machinist and a driver.

The cottages were demolished in 1964 and a Golden Fleece Service Station built on the site, which was demolished in 1985 for the Adelaide Remand Centre.
