The art deco Metro Cinema opened on 6 October 1939. It was designed by Thomas W Lamb from New York in association with local architect F Kenneth Milne, and was designated 88-90 Hindley Street.

The Metro cinema closed in 1972. The building's interior was gutted and redeveloped in 1975 as a four-screen cinema complex by Greater Union Theatres and opened with the world premiere of Picnic at Hanging Rock. The cinema closed in 1991.

The cinema building was demolished in 2005, replaced by 300 apartments for student accommodation and a fast food franchise on the ground floor.

The Victoria Hotel was first licensed in 1840 and the building shown here was built in 1929.
