State Library Catalogue Reference: B 6312

Leopold Conrad's butcher shop at 88 Hindley Street on the north east corner of Victoria Street in 1865. Leopold opened his shop in 1863 and as the business grew, he enlarged it with an ornamental iron lacework verandah. By 1929 the business belonged to W H Bruce.

The building was demolished and replaced by the art deco Metro Cinema which opened in 1939. It was designed by Thomas W Lamb from New York in association with local architect F Kenneth Milne, and was designated 88-90 Hindley Street.

The Metro Cinema closed in 1972. The building's interior was gutted and redeveloped in 1975 as a four-screen cinema complex by Greater Union Theatres and opened with the world premiere of Picnic at Hanging Rock. The cinema closed in 1991.

The cinema building was demolished in 2005, replaced by 300 apartments for student accommodation and a fast food franchise on the ground floor.
