According to Bob Hoad in his book 'Hotels and Publicans in South Australia 1836-1993' the Royal Oak was first established on the east side of O'Connell Street in 1855. The license moved to the present site in 1866. A balcony was added in 1881. Arthur Stoneham was the licensee from 1873 to 1879.

'A quoit match stated to be for £50 a side, between James Kenworthy, a Lancashire man, and Arthur Stoneham, a colonial, took place at the Royal Oak Hotel, North Adelaide, on Saturday afternoon. The game, which excited a good deal of interest, ended in favor of Kenworthy, who scored 12 points against his opponent's six.'
