Top 8 staycation ideas

Last updated 03 Aug, 2022

As the regions of South Australia open their arms to visitors once again, for whatever reason, many of us here in Adelaide may be staying home for the upcoming long weekends and school holidays. To ensure a good dose of holiday fun and to break the routine of the every day, we've compiled a list of vacation-inspired ideas that will have you taking 'holiday snaps' all day long.

Unplug

If you are able to, disconnect from outside communication - even if it's only for one day. Let regular contacts know in advance. Pretend you are out in the wilderness and there is no internet or mobile data connection. Escape from the outside world and take in every special moment of your staycation.

Spa day

Nothing says holiday like glowing skin. Gather all the goodies you have tucked away in your cupboards or perhaps search online for some simple DIY organic face masks, scrubs and soaks. Spend a few hours pampering yourself with a deluxe mani and pedicure, a facial and maybe even that deep-conditioning hair treatment you keep meaning to do. If you're in need of some organic ingredients for your home-made concoctions, Foods for Life (Gawler Place) and House of Health (Adelaide Central Market) both offer home delivery.

Learn a new recipe

Find a recipe online that you have always wanted to try and give it a go. To enjoy the meal with a sense of occasion why not set up the table with your best tableware, candles, flowers from the garden and ask everyone to ‘dress up’ for dinner? For inspiration, check out our collection of recipes from all your favourite Adelaide city cafes, restaurants and stores. You can even order a range of the freshest local produce for home delivery or 'click and collect' from the Adelaide Central Market.

Order 'room service'

If you're not up for cooking a meal yourself, why not support our local restaurants and cafes and order your favourite dish to be delivered to your door. Chefs on Wheels offers a growing collection of dishes from Adelaide's top restaurants and chefs including Paul Baker (Botanic Restaurant), Emma McCaskill (Sparkke at the Whitmore) and Brad Sappenburghs (Comida), to name a few. Check if your restaurant of choice delivers, otherwise UberEats and Deliveroo deliver take-away for a long list of your city-based faves.

Create a reading nook

Find a spot either inside or out where there is good amount of natural light, a comfortable seat and most importantly, peace and quiet. If you don’t have a good book to read yet, you could always borrow one through a free membership at the Adelaide City Libraries.

Set up camp

Set up camp in your backyard. This is especially fun if you have children. The novelty of sleeping in a tent, using torches, cooking outside will make your kids feel like they are on a real outdoor adventure. If it’s raining, why not set up camp inside with your sleeping bags and pillows in the living area. Fairy lights and tee-pees will give your space an extra-magical touch.

Explore locally

One of the wonderful things about Adelaide is that you don’t have travel very far to immerse yourself in nature. The city is full of walking trails, biodiversity sites and gardens as well as recreational spaces like dog parks, playgrounds and sports courts.

Mindful exercise

While you're enjoying the break from the hustle and bustle, practice some self-care with a relaxing yoga session.
