Green spots to enjoy lunch outdoors

Last updated 01 June, 2021

Sometimes it’s the small things that can have the biggest impact on how we feel. The simple act of stepping outside at lunch time, going for a stroll and breathing in some fresh air, can do wonders for your health and wellbeing.

Whether you’re after some quiet solo time, a chance to picnic with a buddy or stretch your legs with the little ones – here are some of our favourite places to ‘refresh and recharge’ at lunch time.

Nooks

Pilgrim Lane

Tucked away behind Treasury 1860, amongst the hustle and bustle of Flinders and Pirie Streets, lies this peaceful little laneway. There’s plenty of benches and shady spots beside beautiful sandstone buildings, making it the perfect place to take five and recharge outside of the office.

Botanic Park

The soaring majesty of the Moreton Bay figs in Botanic Park can put life into perspective. Aside from existential conjuring, the winding knotted roots of the trees provide a lovely nook to make home for a half hour break. Bring a book and a cushion and get comfy.

Balconies

MOD. terrace

Along North Terrace at MOD. you’ll find this relaxed space where the indoors and outdoors meet. Catch up with friends or take some time to yourself amongst the greenery and natural light on the level 1 balcony. The modern and vine covered balcony overlooks the river, golf course and train tracks.

The Outdoor Room

High above Rundle Mall, you might not realise there’s a room designed for city-goers to sit, reflect and enjoy some peace and serenity. Located within the City Library, you can enjoy both fresh air and shelter, with two walls of the room open alfresco-style and the other two enclosed with glass and gorgeous greenery. Grab a book or your laptop and enjoy the breeze.

Lush parks

Whitmore Square / Iparrityi

Step away from your desk and soak up some sun in the square. ‘Check’ out the giant chessboard, or get your body moving with a lunch time match of basketball. Fun fact: there are almost 400 check mates on the giant chess board each year!
