Cbus leading the way with building sustainability standards

Cbus’ project at 50 Flinders Street has achieved 6 star NABERS building, in another example of leadership in the sustainability space and Adelaide’s shared goal of carbon neutrality.

The National Australian Built Environment Rating System (NABERS) is arguably Australia’s most accurate and transparent measure of the environmental impact of a building. The rating takes into account its energy efficiency, carbon emissions, water consumption and waste production relative to similar built structures through the measurement of real-time data. As a voluntary accreditation, it relies on the mutual vision of industry and government in creating spaces that foster innovation and clean technology solutions.

Cbus has continually been a market leader and shown an ongoing commitment to both integrating sustainable feature at the onset of new projects as well as the continual improvement of existing buildings. 50 Flinders Street joins the group’s portfolio of 14 green rating buildings, with Cbus Property chief executive officer Adrian Pozzo attributes the environmental performance of a building to both higher occupancy and rental levels.

The $300 million tower on Flinders Street has increased to the 6 star rating after two consecutive years of 5.5 star ratings. The upgrade can be attributed to the installation of a 66kw solar PV system that was installed in December 2018. CBUS capitalised on the City of Adelaide’s Sustainability Incentive Scheme, which is still available to city businesses, to receive a rebate of $5,000 towards the system. Within the first months since installation, the solar PV system generated approximately 40,000kWh of electricity, producing substantial financial savings for tenants.

“A score of 6 stars for NABERS IE was achieved, demonstrating Cbus Property’s and CBRE’s commitment to maintaining best-in-class air quality and thermal comfort conditions while pursuing sustainability and energy management targets,” CBRE property management senior director Michael Hall said.

With the energy used in commercial buildings in City of Adelaide boundary area accounting for 45 per cent of total emissions for the city, the commitment from commercial property development sector, and partners across all industries, is vital in achieving carbon neutral aspirations.
